ELGA LabWater: carbon emissions calculator

ELGA LabWater is a UK-based manufacturer of pure water equipment, for the research, science clinical and healthcare environments. It exports is products to customers internationally.

The company has a web-based extranet for its worldwide network of distributors and resellers. Distributors can log in to the extranet and compile a carbon footprint calculation for their customers.

Distributors enter information about the customer and product, including:

  • the products
  • the accessories being purchased
  • the consumables required for the products
  • the physical delivery location of the customer
  • the frequency of usage of the product
  • the expected lifetime of the product.

Inside the online Calculator is a large database of product information, including data about the carbon footprint of the product itself (i.e. from its source components), its weight (which affects shipping) and the rate at which it uses water. There is also country-related data, since some countries have water supply and drainage systems which are more "green" than others.

Accessories and consumables also have carbon emission data associated with them.

The delivery location has a considerable influence on the carbon impact, both with respect to the distance it must be transported, and the method of transport (road, rail, sea or air, or a combination thereof).

The Calculator includes data for all ELGA distribution centres around the world, and uses this to help the user choose the distributor and the method of transport according to the customer's location.

carbon footprint analysis

The website produces an analysis of the carbon emission footprint, detailing the impact of the manufactured product, its delivery, usage and servicing.

The analysis contains figures and a graph, and this document can be downloaded as a PDF for the customer's records.

ELGA believes that by being carbon-aware in this way, they give important information to the customer about the environmental impact of their products throughout its lifetime.
